ORAL COMPETITION
Student in high school levels 1 - 5 and 1st and 2nd year college memorize a poem or give a speech according to their level of Spanish class. Students will present their poem or speech in front of a panel of judges and be awarded an appropriate ribbon accordingly: either Sobresaliente, Excelente, or Notable. NEW THIS YEAR Another option for students in the highest level is also possible: presentation of an original student poem. The oral competitions will take place on November 14, 2015 at Niles North High School in Skokie, IL. POSTER COMPETITION- High School students levels 1 – 5 have the opportunity to create a poster that promotes the learning of Spanish, Portuguese, and/or foreign languages in general. Posters will be displayed and the ribbons will be awarded at the Oral Competition on Saturday, November 14th. A grand prize poster will be selected for printing and receive a $50 cash award. ¿QUIERES PARTICIPAR? Interested Payton students should attend the Spanish Contest Info Session with Sra. Vallin this Thursday during enrichment. We will go through the registration process and take time to review the speech topics and poetry selections for this year. AMIGOS will be holding a parent and student info session on October 9th. Stop by to chat with Payton AMIGOS alumni and AMIGOS representatives about this amazing program. The meeting starts at 6:30 and will be held in room 116. About the Amigos Program Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) hosts programs for young adults to volunteer abroad. AMIGOS' volunteer opportunities focus on youth leadership training and community development in Latin America. Check out their website for more information! http://www.amigoslink.org/ Chismosos Spanish Conversation Club starts up again next week during enrichments. We will try and offer at least 2 sessions per month on Tuesdays. Chismosos is a great place to practice your Spanish speaking skills in a fun, stress free environment. The enrichment is open to all Spanish students as well as any other Paytonites that would like to brush up on their Spanish skills. Activities include: conversation mixers, games, music, movies and more. Come on and get your charlar on :) More information on next year's Spanish trip to Oaxaca, Mexico can be found on our trip/exchange webpage. A informational flyer also has more details for interested students. Trip details will be shared with all eligible students in class this week. Please contact Ms. O'Neil if you have additional questions about the trip or the application process. Applications are due by March, 11th. No late or incomplete applications will be considered. Attention Students who received awards on last years National Spanish Exam:
Applications for the 2013 Global Citizen Scholarships and 2013 Junior Travel Awards are now being accepted through February 15, 2013. Application forms for these wonderful experiences are listed on our website at http://nationalspanishexam.org/index.php/about-us/scholarships-for-students. The Environmental Service Learning Scholarship is a unique opportunity to travel to Costa Rica, a country well known for its environmental conservation efforts. You’ll discover fun ways that Costa Rica is environmentally responsible and how you can apply these practices easily once you’re back home. In addition, you’ll gain intimate knowledge of Costa Rican culture by living with host families, attending classes at a local high school, caring for rescued wild animals, enjoying exciting organized excursions, and practicing your Spanish! Tentative Program Dates: July 7th – July 21st, 2013 Program Includes: Round-trip air fare from Chicago, airport departure tax, host family accommodations with full board (three meals per day), full medical insurance, local support, full schedule of activities and excursions, full-time group leader, and passport application fees. Cost: No cost to the scholars, just spending money (we suggest around $100) Requirements: Participants must be between 15 and 17 years old, have 1 or 2 years of high school Spanish, be sincerely interested in the environment and cultural exchange and be willing to learn about and adapt to the customs of the culture, food, community, and host family in Costa Rica. Are you interested in winning prizes like travel scholarships, cash and fancy awards for your college applications? Do you want practice for the AP test, college entrance exams or the SAT II? Do you want to improve your Spanish speaking, listening, reading and writing skills? If the answer is SÍ, then you should consider registering for the National Spanish Exam. The purpose of the National Spanish Examination is 1. to recognize achievement in the study of the Spanish language 2. to promote proficiency in interpretive communication in the Spanish language 3. to assess the national standards as they pertain to learning Spanish 4. to stimulate further interest in the teaching and learning of Spanish Interested students must talk with their Spanish teachers to register, and participate in “Spanish Bootcamp”, a five week enrichment, that will take place in March prior to the exam. In bootcamp we will play games and activities that will help you to prepare for the exam. Space is limited to 20 students per level (Levels 1-3) so let your maestra know by Monday, December 17th if you are interested in participating.
