Lares Trek, Day 1: We set off dark and early at 4:30am to catch a taxi to the Plaza Recocijos where representatives from Llama Path picked us up to embark on our 4-day, 3-night Lares trek, ending at Machu Picchu. We boarded the bus where we met the Llama Path crew - Javier, our guide, Roman, the cook, and Ángel, the assistant cook. We also met Rodrigo, the only other hiker in our group, un brasilero. After having a sumptuous breakfast of tropical fruit, pancakes with caramel, bread and jam and coca tea, we set off from Puma Huanca / Urubamba at 7:30am for the first 14 kilometers of the trek. Essentially the entire day was uphill. While we hiked the horsemen carried most of our belongings as well as the tents and camping gear. Along the way we stopped and visited the ruins of Puma Huanca, which served as an outpost and refuge along this Inca trail. Around 4:15pm we made it to our campsite at Gallo Rumi which sits at 4,100 meters above sea level. Although it was rather frigid we truly enjoyed our homemade dinner, the good company and the starry night sky.
